Dr. Peter M. Robinson, Professor of History, Mount St. Joseph University

Author of The Dance of the Comedians: The People, the President, and the Performance of Political Standup Comedy in America.

IN PERSON at 301 Walnut Street, Lawrenceburg, IN  47025

Presidents sure are funny these days, but then again, they always have been. Ever since its creation by the U.S. Constitution, the office of presidency has embodied our striving to create a more perfect union, but the person of the president, who is, after all, a person, has reliably proved to be laughably less than perfect. Abraham Lincoln was the first to embrace this contradiction and in our darkest national moment, the Civil War. By laughing at himself and prompting others to laugh with him, he at once acknowledged our collective frailties and managed to motivate us toward what he called “the better angels of our nature.” Join us as we trace the history and uncertain future of this “Great American Joke.”
